Dampen or steam the band then place the stretcher in just around the inside band of the hat and turn the center until it opens the hat up a small amount. depending on the hats construction and condition, you might be able to stretch the hat out several sizes.

Pay attention to the stitching on the hat band. If you apply too much force the stitching could break.
